FORMER TEAMMATES TEAM UP TO COACH
Updated: May 5, 2018
During their time together with the Saskatoon Hilltops, former offensive lineman Chris Kulbida and defensive lineman John Pfeifer lined up across from one another in practice and did their best to knock each other around – knocking the other to the ground was even better. Now, as coaches of their respective former positions, the pair instruct members of the Saskatoon Valkyries on how to do the same thing.
Kulbida, who has coached football in some form or another since 2003, showed up to Valkyries practice one day in 2012 and has been hanging around ever since. Initially, what brought him out was his wife, former offensive lineman and current Valkyries coach Beth Thompson, playing on the team but now, six seasons later, he’s still with the team because he “enjoys being involved with football and coaching in any capacity”.
On the other side of the ball, Pfeifer, who works as a firefighter, just completed his second year of coaching with the Valkyries. Pfeifer has a combined coaching experience of 14 years, ranging in levels from Kinsmen football to Team Saskatchewan, but joining the Valkyries organization was an opportunity for a different experience.
“It was an exciting new challenge,” he says on his decision to join the team. “I knew other Valkyries coaches and knew that they loved it. The Valkyries are the gold standard for women’s tackle football and I wanted to see what coaching women’s tackle football was like.”
We couldn't be more grateful for the coaching expertise that these two bring to our lines! Thanks coaches!
