Before every game a “Treat of the Week” is chosen by our coaching staff and announced on Game Day. This term was endearingly coined by Head Coach Pat Barry, and it seems to have stuck with the team. The player chosen is someone who has demonstrated excellent leadership, guidance, and a positive attitude throughout the season and they are named captain for one game.

The “Treat of the Week” for our second regular season game against the Regina Riot was Reed Thorstad. Reed is twenty three years old and is currently studying to become a Elementary school teacher at the University of Saskatchewan and works part time as a project coordinator for the Indigenous Youth Mentorship Program with the College of Kinesiology.

Here are some fun facts about our “Treat of the Week”:

1. How long have you been playing and what positions have you played?

This is my 4th year with the Valkyries and I have played both Quarterback and Receiver.

2. What does being a Valkyrie mean to you?

It means being part of a selfless, hard working, passionate group of ladies. Football is the ultimate team sport and I think the Valkyries really embody that team attitude. I’m definitely very proud to be a Valkyrie.

3. Do you have a game day routine? What is it?

Nothing too crazy! I like arriving at the field early, listening to some good tunes, and going through all our plays in my head.

4. How has football changed your life?

My life would be very different if football was not part of it - I love the sport and I love the opportunities it has afforded me. I have learned so much over my 4 years on the team and I’ve also been lucky enough to make so many lifelong friends through football.

5. What other sports do you play/watch?

I play flag football and basketball!

6. What are you looking forward to this year?

Bringing that championship trophy back to Saskatoon! 💪🏻

7. Worst person to room with?

I’ve honestly always had awesome roomies!!

8. If you could have any occupation what would it be?

Good question... probably something that involves travelling.

9. What colour describes your current mood?

Rienna Rueve, who is currently in her eighth year as a player, commented on this week's “Treat of the Week” Reed, saying: “Reed is a smart and incredibly talented athlete who continues to improve. She brings a very calm and level headed presence to the field. At both quarterback and receiver position, you know she is going to get the job done. I cannot wait to see what the rest of the season holds in store for her.”

Stay tuned for next week’s “Treat of the Week”.
