The Saskatoon Valkyries have clinched a 2nd place playoff spot with a 30-10 win over the Manitoba Fearless at Investor's Group Field in Winnipeg on Sunday afternoon. The Fearless came out strong in the first quarter, gaining an early lead with a field goal after the Valkyries' offence unsuccessfully gambled on a third down and handed the ball over to the Fearless on their 20 yard line. Both defences played with grit and determination, causing losses to their opposing offences several times, and forcing the punt teams to take the field. The Valkyries gained some momentum in the second quarter with a huge 36 yard run from Samantha Matheson, bringing the Valkyries into field goal range. Carly Dyck's attempt from the 10 yard line was an easy three points and the first quarter ended at 3-3. An interception and defensive touchdown for Tori Giles marked the next points for the green and white. The touchdown was Giles' first official touchdown after having a previous pick six being denied due to a penalty in a previous season. The Valkyries' scoring momentum continued late into the first half with a touchdown from veteran Samantha Matheson, followed by a beautiful catch from rookie Sarah Wright. Another field goal from Carly Dyck capped the score at 27-3 at the end of the first half. Other game highlights include a QB sack from Mel Harris, a blocked punt from Emmarae Dale, and a two yard gain from Offensive linewoman, Alyssa Funk, in a trick play. Fearless capped off their score in the second half with a huge pick six from Sara Milani. Another Valkyries field goal made the final score 30-10 for the final season game of 2017. The Valkyries will face their provincial rivals, the Regina Riot, at Historic Mosaic Stadium on Sunday, June 4th at 1PM. The Prairie Conference Champions will then go on to face the Calgary Rage in Saskatoon at SMF field on June 10th.
