VALKYRIES WIN IN HEARTBREAKING CIRCUMSTANCES

The Saskatoon Valkyries finished a perfect season with their 22-7 victory over the Regina Riot at Mosaic Stadium on Sunday. As the final seconds on the game clock wound down, the Valkyries held their helmets high in silence. This bittersweet victory was infused with the tang of grief.

Upon arriving at the field on Sunday morning hours before kickoff, the team would learn about the tragic loss of Justin Filteau, the Valkyries' 26 year old Defensive Line coach. He had planned to fly into Moose Jaw and meet the team in Regina. Tragically, his plane went down in Alberta and there were no survivors.

In honour of beloved Coach Filteau, the team donned the letters "JF" on their helmets and prepared for what seemed like the battle of their lives. Coach Filteau would have wanted them to play. Of that there was no question. The players walked out onto the field hand in hand in a silent tribute.

The Valkyries started the game with a kick off from Sam Matheson. The Riot would go down on their own 10 yard line, eventually leading to a conceded safety and an early lead for the Valkyries. Valkyries kicker #7 Rienna Rueve punted the ball, with the returner brought down at the Riot 3 yard line by #45 Emmarae Dale. Another safety was conceded in the first quarter for a 4-0 lead. Rueve would later kick and score a field goal to bring the score to 7-0. An interception in the second quarter by #24 Ehjae Chan with a return of about 40 yards brought the Valkyries offence on the Riot 30 yard line, setting up for the first touchdown of the game! The Riot's single score came in the second quarter from a long pass in the backfield and a run of about 40 yards. The score at the end of the first half was 14-7 for the Saskatoon Valkyries.

A successful touchdown pass from #15 Alex Eyolfson to #16 Olivia Woo made the score 21-7 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. After a hard fought battle on all fronts, the Saskatoon Valkyries walked away from the 2019 Regular Season with a record of 4-0 after defeating the Riot 22-7.

Your light shines on in our hearts. Lovingly remembering Justin Filteau 1992-2019
In loving memory of Coach Filteau, the Saskatoon Valkyries have dedicated their victory and the 2019 season to their beloved friend and coach.
The Saskatoon Valkyries would like to extend an invite to friends and family of Justin Filteau to join us at our playoff home game this weekend. We ask that you wear a jersey or a piece of clothing from the team/organization that you associate with him. We are also dedicating this game and the rest of our 2019 season to our dear friend and coach and will be playing some of his favourite songs during the game.

We will be hosting the Winnipeg Wolfpack at SMF Field at 1PM on Sunday June 9th. We hope to see you there.
